Daniel Horton has been awarded 2025 Excellence in Mentoring Undergraduate Research Award
March 21, 2025
We are proud to share that Professor Daniel Horton of DEEPS was awarded the 2025 Excellence in Mentoring Undergraduate Research Award by Northwestern's Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. Witnessing the initiative, care, and exceptional effect of Dan's mentoring over the years has been heartwarming. The research his undergraduate mentees complete is frequently published in leading journals (including PLOS Climate, Scientific Reports, Earth’s Future, GeoHealth, Journal of Geophysical Research), with the mentee as the first author of the publication. Undergraduate students are pillars in Dan's research group. Buoyed by the experience they proceed to powerful careers in health, policy, environmental law, and many leading graduate research programs. One mentee shared “Dr Horton has prioritized my growth as a researcher over deadlines and external pressures by letting me pave my own path—while he could have published our project after my graduation from Northwestern in a fraction of the time it took me, Dr. Horton encouraged me to finish our project myself.” Dan's approach includes meaningful consideration of the human condition of his mentees, and of our humanity on Planet Earth. Other mentees shared “Dr. Horton has made [all of us] feel equally seen and supported. … Even beyond all the opportunities, something especially striking about Dr. Horton’s mentorship is his humanity and his emphasis on justice…. Dr. Horton has been a guiding light who has demonstrated the importance of research for the betterment of all and staying engaged even when times are tough.”DEEPS wholeheartedly congratulates Dan for this well-deserved recognition.
