Department Research Lab Manager 1

The Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences at Northwestern University is seeking a Research Lab Manager to provide diverse, essential organizational support for research and teaching on-campus and off-campus. The Department’s Integrated Laboratories for Earth and Planetary Sciences (ILEPS) are the analytical foundation for a wide range of cutting-edge research in Earth and environmental sciences. The Lab Manager will train undergraduate and graduate students in lab safety protocols and common lab methods and will partner with faculty to oversee safety and facilities maintenance. As the department’s centralized technical staff member, the Lab Manager also provides organizational support for on-campus teaching lab materials, department field trips and field courses and research expeditions, and will manage the department collections of physical specimens (e.g., rocks and minerals used for teaching) and field equipment. We seek a flexible, organized, and self-motivated candidate who is eager to support varied teaching and research activities and to learn new skills.

Minimum requirements include BS/BA in a STEM field related to Earth/environmental sciences, experience working in laboratories and field campaigns, demonstrated commitment to field and lab safety, to creating inclusive learning environments, competence with standard office software (e.g., Excel), and a valid US driver’s license with suitable driving record for approval as a NU Safe Driver. Desirable additional qualifications include experience: using and/or maintaining a range of lab and field equipment, working with databases and/or GIS, and/or planning or conducting field-based research in Earth/ environmental sciences.

The Research Lab Manager in the Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences is a Full time 100% position and works on-site 3 - 5 days per week. The target hiring range for this position will be between $55,128 - $77,525 per year. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
